  • The Painted Desert: PART V

Today's pictures are not so way out but it was nevertheless very interesting to see the changes in the landscape.

  • The Painted Desert: PART IV

I never would have believed you if you told me about the colors in the Painted Desert, and when I look at these pictures I see them almost as if for the first time. I know just one thing: I would really like to get back to the deserts of Nevada, Arizona and Utah. I also would like to visit the deserts of Colorado. But for now these images will have to serve as a reminder of a lot of oohs and aahs uttered as I ran around from one vantage point to another.

  • The Painted Desert PART III

Driving through Lake Meade State Park we found the going slow because of all the stopping to gather more color. Well I don't feel like talking - I already have a few thousand words below.

  • The Painted Desert PART II

The Painted Desert - In my Tribe I could not get the song to start automatically so please "shift" + click the link and then minimize the new page if you would like to hear it. Yesterday's photos were pretty bleak but today's will be much more colorful. I am still amazed about the colors to be found out there. See if you agree.

The dark mountain intrigued me most and I wish I could spend a whole day in the vicinity
    Lake Las Vegas
    Browns and Blues
The edge of Lake Meade near Lake Las Vegas in the distance
Shades of Brown and Grey (this could be a new fashion statement)
The colors are the result of different minerals
    Wounded desert
The colors seem to change with the time of day
Browns and greys compliment the Blues
    Awesome shades

  • The Painted Desert PART I

I've always wanted to see the deserts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona and Colorado and the past two weeks we spent a whirlwind holiday in a small portion of the US outback. It is an wonderful world of color, texture and life. I was mesmerized by color and texture to the extent I did not concentrate much on getting photos of living beings. Birds, reptiles and mammals escaped my attention but I saw the most amazing scenes imaginable. My one regret is the small size in which I will display the photos but this is insurance against theft.

The trip started by flying to Las Vegas, NV and travel by car(SUV) for two weeks exploring. On the fist day I planned to travel 123 miles to St George in Utah but 16:00 that afternoon we had not even covered 60 miles. The light was getting dim with clouds gathering in the area and it was time to move on. Showing you some of the photos taken on the first day will take many days so I will start with a few.

Flying over the Grand Canyon on the way to Las Vegas
A small portion of the Colorado River in the bottom of the picture
A small section of Hoover Dam from the air
Lake Las Vegas and the Reflection Bay Golf Course
Hoover Dam is too much to photograph from the ground...
but a glimps can be seen in this photo
    Lake Meade
    Lake Meade State Park
It was not always possible to get close to the mountains
    Unknown (to me) Mesa
